Description

This photogenic galaxy pair is only per chance in the same line of sight to us. NGC 5965 on the left is a large spiral galaxy, about 150 million light years distant and with a true size of 260000 light years, twice as big as the Milky Way. NGC 5963 to the right is a far closer and smaller low surface brightness galaxy with about 34 million light years distance and a size of about 30000 light years. The other galaxies in the image are close to neither of the two. PGC 2544663, located above NGC 5965 is over 500 million light years distance. I also provide the full frame, where I caught a galaxy cluster in the top right with a distance of 2.9 billion light years (the central galaxy is PGC 2554296).

It was challenging to coerce detail from NGC 5965 and at the same time make the faint arms of NGC 5963 visible. This duo deserves more data and darker skies than mine. Still, I quite like that I can show the slight blue tinge of the outer arms of NGC 5965 and resolved some star forming regions in the arms of NGC 5963.
